World Health Organization Confronts Major Staff Reduction After US Financial Withdrawal
The international health organization disclosed intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a quarter β totaling over 2,000 jobs β by mid-2026.
Financial Shortfall Prompts Major Reorganization
This decision comes after the United States, formerly the agency's largest donor, withdrew financial support earlier this year.
Washington had been responsible for approximately eighteen percent of the agency's overall funding, creating a substantial budgetary shortfall.
Projected Workforce Reductions
According to internal estimates, the workforce is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by June 2026.
This reduction of 2,371 positions includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural attrition.
"The past year was one of the most difficult in our existence, while we undertook a painful but essential journey of prioritization and restructuring," stated the organization's leader.
Financial Gap Remains
This Geneva-based body now faces a budget shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to almost a quarter of its total funding.
This figure represents an improvement from a prior projected gap of 1.7 billion dollars reported in spring.
Excluded Funding
These financial projections exclude a further $1.1bn in potential funding from ongoing discussions with multiple contributors.
The representative for the organization noted that the current unfunded portion of the budget is in fact lower than in previous periods, crediting this to several reasons:
- A smaller overall budget size
- The launch of a fresh donor outreach campaign
- Higher in member states' required fees
This realignment initiative is now nearing its end, paving the way for the organization to move forward with a renewed operational model.
