‘It sounds like witchcraft’: can light therapy really give you better skin, cleaner teeth, stronger joints?

Light therapy is certainly having a surge in popularity. There are now available glowing gadgets targeting issues like dermatological concerns and fine lines along with aching tissues and oral inflammation, recently introduced is a dental hygiene device outfitted with tiny red LEDs, marketed by the company as “a breakthrough for domestic dental hygiene.” Worldwide, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. There are even infrared saunas available, that employ light waves rather than traditional heat sources, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. Based on supporter testimonials, it’s like bathing in one of those LED-lit beauty masks, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, reducing swelling and long-term ailments as well as supporting brain health.

Research and Reservations

“It appears somewhat mystical,” observes a neuroscience expert, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Certainly, some of light’s effects on our bodies are well established. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Natural light synchronizes our biological clocks, too, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Sunlight-imitating lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to elevate spirits during colder months. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.

Various Phototherapy Approaches

Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, most other light therapy devices deploy red or infrared light. In rigorous scientific studies, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, spanning from low-energy radio waves to high-energy gamma radiation. Phototherapy, or light therapy employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, with ultraviolet representing the higher energy invisible light, then visible light (all the colours we see in a rainbow) and finally infrared detectable with special equipment.

Ultraviolet treatment has been employed by skin specialists for decades for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It works on the immune system within cells, “and dampens down inflammation,” explains a skin specialist. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA reaches deeper skin layers compared to UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “generally affect surface layers.”

Safety Protocols and Medical Guidance

Potential UVB consequences, such as burning or tanning, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – signifying focused frequency bands – which minimises the risks. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, thus exposure is controlled,” notes the specialist. And crucially, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – different from beauty salons, where oversight might be limited, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Colored light diodes, he explains, “aren’t really used in the medical sense, though they might benefit some issues.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, help boost blood circulation, oxygen absorption and dermal rejuvenation, and promote collagen synthesis – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Studies are available,” states the dermatologist. “However, it’s limited.” In any case, given the plethora of available tools, “it’s unclear if device outputs match study parameters. We don’t know the duration, proper positioning requirements, the risk-benefit ratio. Many uncertainties remain.”

Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives

Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, a microbe associated with acne. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – although, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he mentions, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Without proper medical classification, the regulation is a bit grey.”

Cutting-Edge Studies and Biological Processes

Simultaneously, in a far-flung field of pioneering medical science, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Nearly every test with precise light frequencies demonstrated advantageous outcomes,” he reports. It is partly these many and varied positive effects on cellular health that have driven skepticism about light therapy – that it’s too good to be true. Yet, experimental evidence has transformed his viewpoint.

Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, though twenty years earlier, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I remained doubtful. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, which most thought had no biological effect.”

Its beneficial characteristic, however, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health

Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, particularly in neural cells,” says Chazot, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is always very good.”

With specific frequency application, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. In limited quantities these molecules, explains the expert, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”

All of these mechanisms appear promising for treating a brain disease: antioxidant, swelling control, and pro-autophagy – autophagy representing cellular waste disposal.
